Menopause / Natural – Effective
Strategies
|
|
|
Menopause
is defined as the “cessation of menses in a
menstruating woman”. Most women have come to fear
this hormonal transition stage because of its
association with some very unpleasant symptoms. We will list some of the most common and will outline
strategies for their management. |
|
The
following are the most common symptoms:
|
| 1.) |
“HOT
FLASHES” are
the most feared symptom of menopause. They are
not only very inconvenient, but sometimes,
socially embarrassing. |
| 2.) |
INSOMNIA
makes the irritability that often accompanies
menopause even worse. |
| 3.) |
IMPAIRED
COGNITION includes
forgetfulness, an inability to recall recent
events, difficulty retaining newly learned
material, and the inability to be as creative as
usual. Cognitive difficulties are feared greatly
since many postmenopausal women are at the peak
of their career at the time of the hormonal
transition |
|
|
Most common Diseases
associated with Menopause |
| 1.) |
OSTEOPOROSIS
or
diminished bone mass, can be a very serious side
effect of menopause and can increase a women’s
sense of fragility and tendency of fractures. |
| 2.) |
VAGINAL
DRYNESS and LESSENED LIBIDO may
also accompany menopause rendering normal
intercourse painful and less desirable. |
| 3.) |
INCREASED
CARDIOVASCULAR DEATH:
By age
75, untreated menopausal women have the same
incidence of heart attack as men with more
serious consequences.
|
| 4.) |
INCREASED
NUMBER OF AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS, DIABETES AND
OBESITY. |
|
|
HOW
CAN WE DO AWAY WITH THESE SYMPTOMS AND DISEASES
Women,
who have prepared themselves with proper diets,
exercise, and the right mental attitude, have an easy
transition and maintain a better overall health.
Genetics
play a predisposing role in all conditions such as in
the case of osteoporosis and women of Northern
European descent. In such case those women have to try
harder to even the odds. The formula remains the
same. |

Keep
an active life with proper exercise and positive
mental attitude.
Moderate
exercise improves
bone metabolism, making a woman less prone to osteoporosis
and plays a very large role in the prevention and
treatment of all menopausal symptoms. Excessive
exercise increases free radicals and can lead to immune
dysregulation unless properly balanced by diets and
antioxidants. If you have been accustomed to
high-intensity exercise, you can continue but need to
adopt the above recommendations. Yoga and/or walking are
excellent exercises for menopausal women. Yoga teaches
deep breathing which increases oxygenation of the brain,
reduces tension and improves muscle tone.
Yoga also increases the deposition of calcium in
the bones, reducing the chances of osteoporosis.

USE
PROPER NUTRITION.
Researchers
have proven that foods rich in Vitamin E, Vitamin D, and
fish oil help the body maintain the estrogen balance.
These foods include fresh vegetables, oily fish, and wheat
germ. Eating yams and taking dong-quai (a Chinese herb)
will provide mild but sufficient hormone activity to help
manage menopausal symptoms.
Conversely,
foods that are rich in phosphorus, such as beef and sodas,
by increasing the acidity of the blood, rob the skeleton
of calcium, rendering women more prone to osteoporosis and
hot flashes. Excessive alcohol, coffee, and cigarettes
will have the same effect.
Any
toxic burden coming from food, from not clean intestine (see
Dysbiosis) or from toxic metals, will make menopausal
management very difficult.
These
toxins add an extra burden to the liver - the organ that
plays a central role in the transformation of
estrogen-like substances into estrogen.

USE
PROPER HORMONAL REPLACEMENT THERAPY
Conventional
Hormonal Replacement Therapy, using estrogen
patches can be beneficial in women who have
sudden and severe menopausal symptoms. This
method has been associated with increased risk
for breast cancer. An effective alternative is
the use of various Chinese herbs as mentioned
above and natural Progesterone cream. Natural
Progesterone cream is very effective in
prevention of osteoporosis.
(For
more on this and related issues read “The
Ageless Woman” book Progesterone is an
anti-estrogenic hormone and, in association with
appropriate life style and diets, can prevent
breast cancer.

PROTECT
YOUR BRAIN
Cognitive
functions need to be nurtured by nutrients that
contain
Phosphatidyl serine and inositol, using top
quality lecithins and avoiding toxic foods, as
well as making certain that one has a good
night’s rest helps restore mental functions. |

MANAGE
STRESS
Stress
and sugar intake increase all menopausal symptoms,
especially hot flashes. Avoiding stress is often not
possible, but managing stress is always indicated.
Depending upon the degree of anxiety you have about life
in general or about menopause in particular, we recommend
various forms of stress management including biofeedback
training, visualization methods, self-hypnosis, and
psychotherapeutic counseling.
At
our center we have used very effectively a form of energy
balancing, Biosyntonie, that has proved very beneficial,
whether or not it fits into the patient’s belief system.
(for more information see Biosyntonie).
Also read a
Biosyntonie
testimonial from one of my patients.
The
most important thing is not to feel that
whatever symptoms you have are inevitable and
that only massive hormonal replacement therapy
can change them. Most of my patients do not
resort to that. My personal experiences, and
that of my patients, shows that one can lead an
extraordinarily active and fruitful life through
all these and other alternative interventions.
One can also undo the myths of the inevitability
of decline. Now more than ever, women are called
to remain active and capable after menopause. It
is our responsibility to find the treatment plan
that suits our biochemical, psychological, and
nutritional needs. |
