Pennsylvania Society Lecture - September 27, 1991
"The Effect of Stress on Physiology and It’s Participation in the Disease of Adaptation - a 21st Century prospective for evaluation and intervention"
Workshop by Seraflna Corsello, M. D.
I will be covering the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the general adaptation syndrome (GAS). I will divide the various phases: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion in discrete modules that will be described in depth. Following the phase or exhaustion we will be examining the process of disease formation and a discussion of the triphasic concert of stress (emotional, chemical and physical) will ensue as the interactive forces that lead to the disease of 21st century. This session will end with a question and answer period, and distribution of the questionnaire.
The objective of this session will be to properly illustrate the mechanism by which stress can break down our organismic defenses and diminish our resistance to subsequent bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. Saturday will begin with an overview of the general adaptation syndrome and the stress response. We will then examine the effect of chronic stress on the production of melatonin the importance of melatonin as an overall neuroendocrine regulator and immune stimulant.
The metabolism of neurotransmitters such as GABA. serotonin and catecholamines will be examined. A discussion on the reason for neurotransmitter derangement as related to stress and enzymatic co-factors malabsorption will also be examined.
We will also examine the mechanism of hypertension in chronic stress.
This will be followed by an overview of the effect of stress on cell metabolism as related to excessive free radical pathology.
We will then discuss the Loading Theory (interactive multi-factorial causes of modern diseases -or 21st century diseases). We will discuss the chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome as a typical example of this interactive ethiopathogenetic model.
We will conclude with a review of the multi-factorial intervention plan to obtain reversal and/or resolution of the above described pathological processes. We will terminate with answering questions and distribution of the questionnaire.
The objective of this session will be to demonstrate how the diseases of modern times can only be resolved if one examines the interactive forces that play a role in their ethiopathogeness. Without the keen understanding of the interaction of emotional, physical and biochemical stress on a cellular level we will not be able to resolve the medical crisis presently existing in the United States and most Western cultures.
I will be speaking from the point of view of complementary wholistic medicine, which has retained the wisdom of the understanding of these interactive forces. We also utilize, whenever possible, natural substances and behavioral modalities which are endowed with little or no side effects.
